After months of wondering what is going on with Drew Doughty in terms of a new contract, Kings general manager Dean Lombardi has updated the current negotiation status, which was updated yesterday by Rich Hammond of

Regarding the negotiations, Lombardi stated, “It’s fair to say that, particularly over the last three weeks, we’re at the stage where you would consider them to be serious discussions.”

Although Lombardi admitted that in the past, these types of negotiations would carry over until July and even August, there is a sense that locking up Doughty to a long-term deal is a move that will preferably come sooner rather than later.

Although he is not the only restricted free agent that Lombardi and the Los Angeles Kings are looking to re-sign, it’s fair to say that Drew Doughty is front-and-center on the team’s radar this summer as, as Lombardi put it, “he’s certainly a player that you envision being a cornerstone of your franchise.”

Although Doughty has not been re-signed yet, fans of the Los Angeles Kings can now breathe a collective sigh or relief that contracts talks are in progress and, at that, have become very serious in recent weeks.
