Only two months after being traded from the Oilers to Los Angeles and just thirteen days after making his debut with his new team, Wayne Gretzky was back in Edmonton for the first since being dealt and the first time in a uniform that wasn't that of the Edmonton Oilers.
Losers of their previous two, the Kings were wrapping up their mini-two-game road swing at the Northlands Coliseum. Having been shelled two nights earlier 11-4 by the Flames, the Kings were looking to get back on the right track.
Although Gretzky and the Kings were able to score six times, it was enough as the Oilers prevailed against their former captain by an 8-6 final. As disappointing as the loss was, Gretzky and the Kings would get the last laugh against the Oilers the following spring when they would eliminate the defending champs from the playoffs in an opening-round seven-game series.
