Previewing the Los Angeles Kings' 2013-14 season:

Game 72 @ Philadelphia

March 24, 2014

4pm PST (7pm EST)

After closing out their five-game homestand in historic fashion, the Los Angeles Kings hit the road for three games beginning on Monday night as they travel to the Wells Fargo Center to take on the resurgent Philadelphia Flyers. The matchup will mark the returns of Mike Richards and Jeff Carter to their old stomping grounds. The Kings will also see former teammates Wayne Simmonds, Brayden Schenn and even ex-assistant GM Ron Hextall, who returned to the City of Brotherly Love in the off-season to continue the same role.

This is the second and final meeting between these two clubs with the Flyers winning 2-0 at Staples Center back on February 1. But while the Kings have snapped out of their scoring funk since then, the orange-and-black have picked it up as well.

It wasn’t too long ago when the Flyers were on the outside looking in on the playoff picture in the East. But they have strung together five-straight wins while holding a one-point lead over the Rangers for second in the Metropolitan Division entering Monday night.

Speaking of Wayne Simmonds, the Kings will need to find a way to contain their former winger as he is currently tied with Claude Giroux for the team lead in goals with 24 and sits second in points to Giroux with 54. Aside from Giroux, the Kings will need to slow down the aforementioned Brayden Schenn who has 18 goals thus far in addition to Jakub Voracek, Scott Hartnell and Matt Read, all of whom have 19 tallies on the year. Above all, the silver-and-black will need to find a way to solve netminder Steve Mason who turned away all 35 shots for the shutout at Staples Center nearly two months ago. While the Kings did have success against Mason when he was with Columbus, they know that this is not the same goaltender.

In addition, Kings’ captain Dustin Brown, who left Saturday’s game versus Florida with chest contusions is questionable for Monday night.

While the Kings are in for a tough test, they should be ready to get their road trip started with a bang. We’ll see how they do.

Enjoy the game!
