Game 1 (1-0-0)

The Los Angeles Kings started their pre-season on the right foot as they defeated the Phoenix Coyotes tonight at Arena in Glendale.

Jonathan Bernier played the majority of the game in the Los Angeles going through the first two periods before being relieved by Jeff Zatkoff to begin the third. Bernier stopped 17 of 18 shots while Zatkoff, in his twenty minutes of work, stopped 8 of 9 shots.

Both teams exchanged goals in the first as Ethan Moreau opened the scoring with his first marker as a King. After a scoreless second, Shane Doan gave Phoenix the lead before Tyler Toffoli scored just under four minutes later on the powerplay. It stayed that way until the final minute when, with 49 seconds remaining in regulation, Dustin Penner potted the winner for Los Angeles.

Trevor Lewis had the most productive night for Los Angeles but assisting on all three goals. Tyler Toffoli added an assist to go with his goal and Anze Kopitar, in his first game since his injury last season, registered five shots on goal while amassing a -1 rating.

So, the night in Phoenix ended on a positive note. Let's hope we can say the same for the game in Los Angeles which is still in progress.
